What you need to know about frequent flyer miles

Frequent flyer miles are thought to be complex in their purchase and use and indeed how to purchase or sell airline miles is indeed an art. There are a few things you need to understand about miles before you proceed.

  1.  Blackout dates do not exist anymore. You can use the miles to travel at any point of the year, including peak seasons. So this should make the buy and sell process a lot more easier.
  2. There is no expiry date whatsoever. Even if there is it can easily be removed. Airlines have removed the concept of expiring miles. This gives you the flexibility to use them as you desire.
  3. You don’t have to be a frequent flyer to earn these miles. A lot of airlines have partnered with a lot of land partners that allow you to earn miles through your credit card. Now you can shop, dine, stay and earn miles through your credit card. The credit points can be claimed as miles.
  4. You don’t have to save your miles for international travel only. Whats the point if you are going to do that a few times a year. If you travel more domestically then it is better to save up on the flights rather than wait to go out of country.
  5. Whoever says it is clever to save miles for first class travel, is not exactly right. What is better? Traveling once through business class or twice through economy? The latter of course. The distance and time is the same, so might as well make the most of it.
